Chaga Etagere

Five open shelves, over two meters of reclaimed teak, and just enough presence to anchor a lobby without blocking the sightline behind it. That’s the brief the Chaga Etagere was built around.

At 150 x 50 x 220 cm, this étagère reads more like architecture than furniture. The rounded, pill-shaped shelf edges echo a mid-century line, and the round posts are pegged at every shelf rather than simply glued, so the joinery is meant to be seen from either side. There’s no back panel and no closed sides. Set it against a wall and it displays. Set it mid-room and it divides space while keeping the room readable through it.

Built from teak that already had a first life

Every board in the Chaga starts as reclaimed teak: timber pulled from demolished houses and decommissioned boats around Java, not felled from a forest for this order. That’s the same zero-deforestation sourcing behind everything that comes out of our Semarang workshop. It’s also why the grain on a piece like this rarely looks uniform. Old teak carries nail holes, tool marks, and color shifts that freshly cut wood hasn’t earned yet, and on an open shelf where every surface is visible, that history is the point. The finish is what we call Olpatine, a patina technique that pushes the reclaimed teak toward a warmer, aged tone instead of the flat honey color of a fresh sanding. Underneath the tint, it’s the same oiled teak surface, so it wears the same way over years of lobby traffic.

Built to order, not off a shelf

Nothing about the Chaga ships as a fixed SKU. Height, width, and shelf count can be adjusted to fit a specific lobby footprint or ceiling line, and the Olpatine finish can run lighter or darker to match an existing material palette. Where it earns its space

We designed this one for hotel and resort lobbies: the reception or lounge area where a piece has to double as storage and as the first thing a guest notices on the way in. Loaded with books, ceramics, or a curated object display, it carries visual weight. Left mostly empty, the frame still does the work on its own. Hospitality FF&E teams tend to spec it flush against a feature wall, or floating mid-room as a soft divider between reception and lounge seating.

It’s a weaker fit for a tight corridor or anywhere you need full visual separation. The open sides mean whatever sits on the other side stays partly in view.
